Five soldiers killed in explosion in southeastern Turkey

An explosion occurred in the city of Uludere of the Sirnak province in southeastern Turkey, killing five servicemen and injuring eight more, Haber 7 newspaper reported Aug. 10.

A remotely controlled homemade mine was detonated when an armored personnel carrier with servicemen inside was passing by. The mine was installed by militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), according to the newspaper.

An operation against the PKK started in Uludere following the attack.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for over 25 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

The UN and the European Union list the PKK as a terrorist organization.
