15 February 2016 [15:41] - TODAY.AZ

Four people died, while five were injured in a car explosion 15 km from the city of Derbent, in Dagestan, near a police checkpoint Feb. 15, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

There are two police officers and two civilians among the victims, according to the agency.

Preliminary reports say a vehicle approached the police checkpoint and the bomb was detonated. Further details, including casualty numbers, are being confirmed at this time.

Earlier reports indicate the explosion was a suicide bombing, a source told the agency. The blast was reportedly so strong it completely incinerated four vehicles parked in the vicinity of the checkpoint.

However, later, the source added the explosion could have been caused by a gas tank inside the car blowing up. The vehicle was determined later to have been a Lada Priora.
