Japan's highest waterfall freezes

Japan's highest waterfall has frozen in the chilly weather, according to News on Japan. Called Nachinotaki, the waterfall in Wakayama Prefecture is 133 meters high.

A nearby Shinto shrine, Kumano Nachi Taisha, was made to honor the flowing water as a deity.

A priest at the shrine discovered on Monday morning that the basin of the waterfall had frozen over. On surrounding rocks, the spray had formed into icicles.

In the sunshine, rainbow colors appeared over the white ice, creating a visual, icy spectacle.

Shrine officials say the temperature around the waterfall had fallen to minus 5 degrees Celsius as of 6AM. The ice did not melt even in the afternoon and many tourists were able to enjoy the sight.
