Armenia faces the threat of exhausting water resources as a result of ignorance to the protection of water reserves and mismanagement of the environment. The government not only closes its eyes to the deliberate destruction of the environment, but also acts as an implementer of ecological terror. This dangerous trend challenges neighboring countries, which have often voiced their concerns over Armenia’s environmental crimes.

Armenia’s 0.9 percent surface is waterways. Ecologists are alarmed over the increasing interference of human elements into nature, which are sure to destroy ecosystems in this small South Caucasus nation and within its neighbors.

"Lake Sevan, for example, with unique quality of water, is in need of more careful treatment – its coast is scattered with garbage and the pipes of nearby houses that destroys the micro flora and the most ridiculous things is that nobody cares about it," said Inga Zarafyan, leader of Ecolur NGO.

Armenia faces the threat of losing its water resources and the state has not thought over a scenario that could help save its ecology in danger.

Environmental terror, a deliberate attempt to damage the flora and fauna of other countries by destroying its natural resources, is a concept that is more seen in the country nowadays.

In some countries like Armenia, governments seem unable to handle the situation and lose control, watching helplessly as the local population leaves their homes in an effort to escape from damaged ecology.

"It turns out that people in Armenia have no idea how to properly treat water," she said.

The Caucasus region already suffers the serious consequences of climate change and the deposition of ice and snow on biodiversity, Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature reports. What is expected is a reduction in river flow, precipitation in continental regions and of a higher frequency of drought at Lake Sevan.

Zarafyan also said that the lack of water caused by drying of rivers and lakes leads to so-called ecomigration, a situation that arises when the terrain is unsuitable for human settlement, prompting people to migrate.

Armenia pollutes not only its own water reserves, but also the transboundary Kura River. The volume of biogenic substances in the river and its tributaries exceeds the established norm by several times as a result of the discharge of untreated water and industrial waste into the river from Armenian territory.

The planet is our common home and one should realize the scale of the problem posed by Armenia. The Armenian government should understand that water resources are not endless and the ill treatment can destroy the natural order.
