Iran’s chief economist has failed for the third time to satisfy the members of the Iranian parliament, which raised likelihood of his impeachment.

Iranian Economy Minister Ali Tayyeb Nia failed to convince members of the parliament during a questioning session, Nasim news agency reported.

This was the third time Tayyeb Nia was put to questioning by the MPs and failed to provide satisfactory explanations.

Last February, his report on the falling trend of the stock market index was not convincing for the members of the parliament.

This time Tayyeb Nia was questioned by MP Mehrdad Bazrpash, who posed two queries.

The first question was about implementing a law on opening a letter of credit banking account. The second question required the latest report on Iran’s tax revenue from two years ago.

Bazrpash was not satisfied with Tayyeb Nia’s answers and asked other MPs to cast votes.

80 MPs voted for the minister while 105 MPs voted against him and 10 other abstained.

In 2013, Tayyeb Nia received yellow cards from two MPs when summoned to provide comments about Central Bank ex-governor Bahmani’s conduct.

Under Iranian law, failing three times to answer lawmakers’ questions paves the way for impeachment.

The Iranian parliament has summoned several ministers including the foreign minister, the interior minister, the intelligence minister, and the science minister, for explanation over their performances since President Hassan Rouhani took office in August, 2013.

In the past, several ministers received “yellow cards” from the MPs.
