The decision to commit suicide might seem like quite a brave step, but it stems from a man’s weakness before his problems. Research shows that social regression stands on top of the factors pushing people to this unbelievably cruel decision.

The increasing number of suicide deaths in the Armenian society is alarming. The cases of suicides and suicidal attempts have considerably increased in number, said Karine Kuyumjyan, the Head of the Census and Demography Division at the National Statistical Service recently.

A total of 397 suicides and suicide attempts were recorded in the first half of the year, an increase of 74 cases compared to the same time period in the previous year.

A total of 285 of the aforementioned 397 cases were suicide attempts, and 112 of them had ended in suicide. Meanwhile, 51 of these victims were female, whereas 246 were male.

As to the problems leading to such psychological ends, they are quite different – ranging from poverty, unemployment, stress, depression, mental disorders, social injustice, to family problems. Many people find self-termination as a way out poverty, because at the time, it seems like an easy out for a life of problems.

Kuyumjyan puts the high unemployment rate as the top of reasons for attempts of suicides.

According to the UN report, the average level of unemployment was 15.4 percent in Armenia in 2014. This year, this indicator reached 17.6 percent. The main problem is the high unemployment among the youth at the age of 15-24 years, which exceeds 40 percent.

According to National Statistical Service of Armenia, the most difficult employment situation is recorded in the northern regions of the country. Unemployment among youth in the second-large city of Armenia, Gyumri, is at 52 pecent.

Suicide problems, unfortunately, remain one of the most worrying in almost every modern society. The Armenian government, however, does nothing to give people at least a better hope for the future. On the contrary, the government continues its aggressive external policy, causing a deep economic crisis; and the situation is worsening day by day. Frequent protests among the population, the increasing number of suicides, people’s poverty must explain the government that it has to change the situation that demands big changes.
