Turkmenistan extends export of electricity

In order to increase the volume of electricity exported to Afghanistan, construction of an overhead transmission line with a voltage of 500 kilovolts is underway in Turkmenistan, which is currently in the final stage, said the message of the government of Turkmenistan May 27.

“However, with the implementation of this ambitious project, the export of Turkmen electricity to Tajikistan and Pakistan via Afghanistan will become technically possible,” said the message.

Construction of high-voltage overhead transmission lines is also planned in Afghanistan in order to create a power system that can accept a large amount of exported electricity, which will allow Turkmenistan in the near future to establish cooperation in the field of electricity not only with Afghanistan but also other countries of the region, the message said.

The message said that the Afghan delegation, which arrived in Ashgabat to discuss prospects of cooperation in the field of electricity and implementation of a joint “Memorandum of Understanding on further cooperation in the field of electric power industry”, held talks with the leadership of the ministry of energy of Turkmenistan and the Turkmenenergo State Power Corporation.

During the meeting, the sides discussed further prospects of interstate cooperation in the field of electric power, in particular issues relating to the conditions of the long-term purchase and sale and the volumes of the supplied electricity.

Until 2020, Turkmenistan plans to build a total of 14 gas turbine power plants, commissioning of which will serve as both a reliable and uninterrupted power supply to consumers in the country and an increase in export of electricity to foreign partners in accordance with the “Concept of development of Turkmenistan's power industry for 2013-2020.”
