Kazakhstan has decided to hold early presidential elections after all political parties reached consensus on the issue.

The Constitutional Council of Kazakhstan sees no obstacles for holding early election and on February 23 it adopted a regulatory decision on handling the Chairmanship of the Senate. The decision is based on an interpretation of paragraph 3.1 of Article 41 of the Kazakhstan’s Constitution, which is regulated by holding early presidential elections in the country, Kazakh media reported.

The Constitutional Council clarified that the norm should be understood in such a way that the Kazakh president has the exclusive right to unilaterally hold early presidential elections.

The initiative to hold early presidential elections in Kazakhstan was voiced at a meeting of the Council of Kazakhstan’s Assembly of People on February 14. It was unanimously supported by its delegates.

The presidential elections are to be held in 2016.

During the last presidential elections in 2011, President Nursultan Nazarbayev gained a landslide victory with nearly 96 percent of the votes and since then the citizens of Kazakhstan have continued to support him.

On the other hand, holding early elections requires taking some financial measures that could cost the government millions.

Yerbolat Dossayev, Kazakh Minister of National Economy has recently said more than five billion tenge ($27 million) are needed to hold the presidential elections in the country, Kazakh media cited him as saying.

"I think every citizen of Kazakhstan is familiar with the initiative of the People’s Assembly. We support the initiative and the elections given the current conditions. There is not enough money. But you can’t say this will be a huge expense. In 2016 we envisaged to use a little more than 5 billion tenge to hold presidential elections," Dosayev said.

Some believe that early presidential elections in Kazakhstan will pave the way for further economic development. According to them, the elections will also prevent economic crisis in the country. Experts believe 2016 will see the peak of the global economic crisis.

Holding of early elections in Kazakhstan would enable the Council government to more effectively implement its new anti-crisis infrastructure development program called Nurly Zhol and withstand the increasing global economic challenges, according to the Council of Kazakhstan’s Assembly of People.
