Iran and one of its biggest partners- Russia- are undertaking measures to expand their economic cooperation.

Russia has been seeking to expand economic cooperation with Iran after the U.S. and its Western allies imposed sanctions on Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine. After imposing an embargo on food imports from the U.S. and European countries in response to sanctions over Ukraine, Russia unveiled plans to import food supplies from Iran.

Iran is intended to take advantage of Moscow's ban on food imports from the Western countries. It is also determined to take Europe's place in Russian food market.

A group of Russian inspectors are in Iran to visit the country’s poultry farms as well as factories producing dairy products.

The visit comes as part of bilateral talks between Tehran and Moscow to facilitate food exports from Iran to Russia, IRNA news agency reported.

After the 7-day visit, the findings of the Russian delegation will be discussed in a meeting to be attended by Iranian and Russian officials.

The inspectors will issue certificate for exporting poultry and dairy products from Iran to Russia if the negotiations between the two sides yield positive results.

Back in January, Iranian ambassador to Russia announced that Tehran and Moscow were planning to set up a joint account to ditch dollar in their trade transactions.

Earlier Rosselkhoznadzor Spokesman Alexey Alekseyenko said Russia and Iran may start using national currencies in bilateral food trade from 2015.

Russia and Iran rank the first and second respectively in the world in terms of natural gas reserves and second and fourth in oil production. All these, have encouraged the two to pursue economic partnerships involving refining and export of oil and gas.

Beyond their trade and cooperation in hydrocarbons, Iran and Russia have also expanded trade ties in many non-energy sectors of the economy. Economic cooperation between the two countries has also expanded on the provincial level.

Earlier, Russian official said trade between Iran and Russia may soon increase from the current $1.7 billion to $3 billion. However, the two countries eye to increase the trade turnover up to $10 billion.
