Russia to hold large-scale drills in Armenia

The large-scale drills involving all units of the Russian military base in the Southern Military District (SMD) will be for the first held in Armenia Oct. 13-19, Novosti-Armenia agency reported citing the SMD press service.


The drills, which will be the final exam for the summer training period, will involve about 3,000 soldiers and 500 units of military and special equipment.

The drills will particularly include modern fourth-generation MiG-29 fighter jets of the Russian aircraft unit, stationed at the Erebuni military airport in Yerevan.

The SMD said the main goal of the drills is to check the combat readiness of the military unit.

It is planned that during the tactical exercises the Russian military will move about 1,000 kilometers on different types of armoured and motorized vehicles.

They will also shoot more than 30,000 artillery shells, and carry out 300,000 shots from automatic guns and heavy machine guns.
