Turkey, Russia talk on Karabakh conflict resolution

22 November 2013 [15:30] - TODAY.AZ

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan have discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict following the narrow format talks, RIA Novosti reported on Friday.

"There are common actions that we must take," Erdogan said at a meeting of the High Level Cooperation Council between Russia and Turkey today. "The talks on these topics allowed us to create a platform to resolve these issues."

According to Erdogan, Russia and Turkey have obligations in the region in terms of the Armenian -Azerbaijani conflict settlement.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
