Ground broken for third Bosporus bridge in Istanbul

The foundation laying ceremony for a third bridge over the Bosporus took place in Istanbul, Turkish TRT Haber TV channel reported on Wednesday.

The laying ceremony took place with the participation of Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other officials of the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister said that the new bridge will be named after Yavuz Sultan Selim.

According to the report, the construction of the bridge will be undertaken by a South Korean firm. Its construction is scheduled for completion and commissioning in 2015.

Earlier the Ministry of Transport, Shipping and Communications of Turkey stated that the third bridge over the Bosporus will be 10 lanes, including two railway lanes.

The service life of the bridge is planned be 10 years. Its construction will contribute to fuel savings of $1.4 billion.
