Erdogan to head to Gaza notwithstanding U.S. call for postponement

22 April 2013 [13:47] - TODAY.AZ
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to visit the Gaza Strip despite U.S. calls to abandon the visit, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported on Monday with reference to a diplomatic source.

"The U.S requesting the abandonment of the visit to Gaza is not new to us," a source said. "This is a U.S normal reaction. Erdogan's programme has not been changed because of Washington's reaction."

Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul where Kerry arrived to attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the Group of Syria's Friends, he stressed that it would be better if Prime Minister Erdogan postponed his visit to Gaza.

Erdogan is expected to visit the Gaza Strip on May 16 after an official visit to the U.S.
