OIC head nominated for post of UN Secretary General

Saudi Arabia proposed the candidacy of Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu to the post of the UN Secretary General, the organisation said on Monday.

In particular, the head of the Saudi Centre for Strategic Studies, Anwar Ashki said Ihsanoglu has made considerable progress in the post of OIC Secretary General and in particular in the political, humanitarian and cultural spheres. Therefore Ihsanoglu is the most suitable candidate for the post of the UN Secretary General.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has been the Secretary General since Jan. 1, 2005. Ihsanoglu is a graduate of the Ain Shams University of Cairo. In 1966-1970 he was a professor of Turkish language and literature at this university. In 1970-1980 he was lecturer at Ankara University. In 1984-2000 he taught at the Department of the History of Science at the Istanbul University.

The term of office of the current UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will end on June 21, 2016.
