Parts of Patriot complexes supplied to Turkey

18 December 2012 [14:35] - TODAY.AZ
Parts of the Patriot surface-to-air missile batteries to be deployed in Turkey in the first few days of 2013, were delivered to the country yesterday, CNN Turk TV channel reported on Tuesday.

Along with these parts, some of the personnel who will service the Patriot surface-to-air missile arrived in Turkey. The personnel are being stationed at the Incirlik military base in the Adana province.

Earlier it was reported that Turkey will receive six Patriot batteries from NATO. Germany, the Netherlands and USA will supply them.

Turkey appealed to NATO in the second half of November with a request to provide it with Patriot systems for protection against Syria's possible air attack.

The Syrian army periodically bombs the border areas with Turkey. In October, six Turkish citizens were killed by Syrian Armed Forces in another direct hit.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 30,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
