The Georgian Prosecutor's Office officially declared the former head of the Constitutional Security Department of the Interior Ministry, Data Akhalaia a wanted person.
Last night the Prosecutor's Office requested that the Interior Ministry launch an investigation and it demanded a search of former high ranking officials including: Soso Topuridze, Gerontiy Alania and Oleg Melnikov along with Akhalaia. They will be sought by Interpol.
Akhalaya Topuridze, Alanya and Melnikov are accused of abuse of power, in particular, beating the police. Akhalaia is also accused of illegal suppression of freedom.
Data Akhalaia's lawyer, Irakli Zakareishvili issued a statement, in which he called the court's decision to use preventative imprisonment 'unlawful' and 'unreasonable'. According to the lawyer, the judge did not consider the evidence and arguments submitted by the defense. Zakareishvili said the chief prosecutor is using accusatory propaganda against Data Akhalaia, which influenced the judge's decision. The lawyer noted that Akhalaia is not hiding and will return to his homeland after the pressure upon him calms down.
The brother of Data Akhalaia - Former Defense and Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaia, who is accused of abuse of power and beating military personnel, is also in custody.
