No new requirements for Georgia's NATO accession

06 December 2012 [09:35] - TODAY.AZ
There are no new requirements and exams for Georgia's accession to NATO, the Alliance's special representative for South Caucasus and Central Asia, James Appathurai told journalists on Wednesday.

He noted that there is only one requirement - to continue reforms to achieve NATO standards.

"The last election was a difficult exam, and the exam is passed. Next exam, which is the part of the same process, is the peaceful co-existence of political parties. It isn't new. There must be functional government, which is the basic standard for NATO," Appathurai said.

In this regard, he called the appointment of new Chief of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces as "encouraging event."

"It means that ways for collaboration are found. They may dislike each other, but they must be able to work together to reach agreement even on very complex issues. I think it will be good for Georgia. Passing of the easy examination provides little progress in relations but difficult examine causes a big progress," Appathurai said.
