EU urges Georgian authorities to observe rule of law

EU High Representative Catherine Ashton spoke about the need to follow the principles and rule of law due to the recent arrests in Georgia, the Georgian presidential press service said following today's meeting between Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and EU High Representative Catherine Ashton.

She has expressed satisfaction with the democratic parliamentary elections and peaceful transfer of power in Georgia.

However, Ashton stressed that the EU pays particular attention to the constructive cooperation of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.

Saakashvili and Ashton have also discussed the relationship between Georgia and the EU. Ashton has expressed the hope that Georgia's foreign policy will not change and integration into European organizations will continue. She has pointed to the need to complete the negotiations for comprehensive free trade and agreement on associated membership.

The parties have also discussed the issues of Georgia's security and the EU observers' activity in this direction.
