Abdullah Gul: Turkey becomes great power

Turkey has passed a long way of development and became a great power since the Republic was proclaimed on October 29, 1923, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said at a ceremony celebrating the 89th anniversary of the Republic, TRT Haber TV channel reported.

"Turkey is proud of its achievements," Gul said. "It intends to further develop democracy and economy and to raise the welfare of people and political power on the world stage. Turkey will solve all the problems facing it. It will not allow them to hamper the development of the country."

Turkey celebrates the 89th anniversary of the Republic today.
