Ten people were executed in Tehran City Prison in Iran today, MEHR news agency reported.
According to the report, these individuals were executed being accused of illicit drug trafficking and sale. These persons in two groups dealt with drug sale in Tehran. Funds in bank accounts, their assets, properties and land plots were seized.
According to international media outlets, more than 488 people were executed in Iran last year (from October 2011 to October 2012). The report says during this period over 333 people were sentenced to death penalty. Some 33 percent of executed individuals were accused of drug trafficking, while 13 percent - rape.
UN and Amnesty International have repeatedly called on Iran to set aside the death penalty.
