Georgian President assesses upcoming parliamentary elections

24 August 2012 [13:10] - TODAY.AZ
Parliamentary elections of 2012 are crucial for Georgia, President Mikheil Saakashvili said while presenting candidate from National Movement for majoritarian MPs of Samtredia.

He presented a known doctor Merab Janelidze to 12,000 supporters who gathered at the town square.

"This is a crucial election for Georgia. This is a referendum on what we have achieved over the past eight years. It's not my fate that is at stake, but the fate of the whole Georgia, our children and our youth," Saakashvili said.

At the same time, the president urged people to wonder about whether Georgia has become better than it was eight years ago.

"I want each of you have to give himself the question I give myself each day - whether Georgia has become better than it was eight years ago? If so, then we should not go back, should do not return the mummified figures. Our route is directed only towards progressive development," Saakashvili said.

The president promised this week to restore the railway in Samtredia, as it was in Soviet times.

"Samtredia must become the center of rail and air links," he said.
