16 August 2012 [11:25] - TODAY.AZ

Turkish President Abdullah Gul held a bilateral meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of an emergency summit meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Anadolu Agency reported.

Turkish sources close to the meeting said the two leaders had discussed the Syrian crisis as Gul had conveyed Turkey's unease over developments in Syria.

The Turkish president also held separate meetings with Libyan President Mohammed el-Megarif, as well as with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati, and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.

Syria's membership to OIC should be suspended

Gul stated earlier Syria's membership to OIC should be suspended.

Turkish president pointed out the latest developments in Syria and said that the regime that used heavy weapons towards its citizens caused their death.

Gul said, "We tried our best for a peaceful transformation and did everything to prevent Syrian people from being exposed to such violence however, the Baas regime replied to these efforts with guns. The first thing that needs to be considered is that the period after Al-Assad should be completed quickly. Syria's membership to OIC should be suspended. If this current war and conflict continue, the blood thirst, revenge, separation and confusion will worsen."
