'Iran always welcomed "well targeted and systematic" negotiations'

16 April 2012 [11:36] - TODAY.AZ
The spokesman of Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali in an interview with Trend named the atmosphere of talks between Iran and six major powers held in Istanbul on April 14 'positive', saying that the upcoming negotiations scheduled in Baghdad for next month can progress if the West countries avoid politicizing the issue.

In a rare case, both the West and Iran recognized nuclear talks over Iran's disputed nuclear program, that had been suspended for 15 months because of lacking mutual understanding between the parties, as "positive".

Iran and P5+1 (U.S., U.K, France, Russia, China + Germany) held talks in January 2011 in Istanbul, which the West called "abortive".

Jalali said Iran has always welcomed "well targeted and systematic" negotiations with defined framework. "We want the talks to be held basing on international laws and in framework of legal rights, but it will be abortive if the West countries want to take political approach towards the issue," he added.

Jalali underlined that the International community should recognize the legitimacy of Iran's peaceful nuclear activities.

Speaking at a press conference shortly after yesterday talks, Catherine Ashton the chief of P5+1 nuclear delegation at talks with Iran, said "we have agreed that the non-proliferation treaty forms a key basis for what must be serious engagement to ensure all the obligations under the treaty are met by Iran while fully respecting Iran's right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy."

Iran's top negotiator Saeed Jalili also said that his deputy Ali Baqeri and EU foreign policy deputy chief Helga Schmid have been assigned to draft an agreement on cooperation between Tehran and the six world powers before the upcoming meeting in Baghdad on May 23, Fars News Agency reported.

The P5+1 spearheaded the diplomatic efforts to persuade Iran to limit its nuclear program, which Iran say is purely peaceful while UN and Western leaders suspect of military purposes.

So far, The UNSC has adopted four rounds of sanctions, inside of the U.S. and the European Union's tightened sanctions imposed to Iran, intended to halt Iran's nuclear program which is suspected to have military dimensions.
