Any further militarization in Syria will be disastrous, UN-Arab League
envoy Kofi Annan said during a joint press-conference with Iran's
Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran today, Press TV reported
live.
Annan arrived in Iran yesterday to hold talks on the Syrian issue with
Iranian leaders. Iran has been supportive of Annan's plans to resolve
the Syrian crisis.
During the conference, Annan thanked Iran for support.
"We are holding discussions with Syrian authorities, and we want to
deploy our authorities there," Annan noted. "As soon as the Security
Council approves it, we will do that."
Ali Akbar Salehi in his turn underscored that Iran will continue its
support for Annan's plan, noting that it is important for Syrian people
to support it as well, and not to allow any military intervention from
the outside.
One of Kofi Annan's proposals for solving Syria crisis is a six-point
peace plan, which means 'stopping all forms of armed violence by all
parties of the conflict under UN supervision, starting with withdrawal
of Syrian troops from the country's major cities'.
The plan calls for a commitment to stop all armed violence, a daily
two-hour humanitarian ceasefire, media access to all areas affected by
the fighting, an inclusive Syrian-led political process, a right to
demonstrate, and release of arbitrarily detained people.
Syrian troops killed 31 people on Tuesday despite efforts by
international mediator Kofi Annan to ensure the government and
opposition implement a ceasefire this week.
