Eleven people were killed last night when a fire swept through a number of workers’ tents at a mall construction site in Istanbul’s Esenyurt district.
The fire erupted at around 9 p.m. yesterday in one of the tents and soon spread through the entire site, engulfing the workers in their sleep. Some workers reportedly died due to the fire while others died of smoke inhalation.
Firefighters immediately arrived on the scene and recovered the bodies of the 11 workers.
The families and relatives of those killed quickly rushed to the scene but many failed to obtain any news of their loved ones. The Labor and Social Security Ministry has begun an investigation into the fire and on the workers’ conditions during and after work hours.
