U.S. ambassador: Azerbaijan doing more to fight human trafficking

Azerbaijan is doing more to fight human trafficking, U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza said addressing the Fourth Regional Meeting on assistance to human trafficking victims and social integration model development in Baku on Thursday. He said Azerbaijan is doing significantly better than we thought in the sphere of human trafficking.

"Since we have been working together Azerbaijan is doing more to fight against labor trafficking," Bryza added. At present, there are 33,000 human trafficking victims in the world.

The event is attended by head of the Interior Ministry's Department for Combating Human Trafficking Javad Shikaliyev, U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza, the International Organization for Migration's country director for Southern and Eastern Europe and Central Asia Renate Held Hyatt.

Addressing the meeting Shikaliyev said officials are fined in the amount of 3,000-5,000 manat, while legal entities in the amount of 30,000-35,000 manat for illegally employing foreigners and stateless persons.

The meeting, which will last two days, aims at exchanging information by international experts on labor exploitation, organ transplantation, current situation with sexual exploitation and relevant tendencies.
