U.S. regrets verdict on participants in April protest in Azerbaijan

The United States expressed its regret over the sentencing of participants in the anti-government protest on April 2, U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza said on Tuesday

"We hope that Azerbaijan will comply with European Human Rights and Azerbaijani legislation during the appeal case [over this sentence]. As Azerbaijan is a member of international organizations, it must abide by their standards," he said. .

The individuals detained in connection with an April rally in Baku were sentenced on Monday. The court sentenced Arif Hajili, Tural Abbasli and Muhammad Mejidli to 2 years and six months in prison. A fourth detainee, Fuad Gahramanli, was sentenced to two years conditional imprisonment as he has two children.

The so-called Public Chamber held an unauthorized rally on Fountains Square in Baku on April 2. A criminal case was filed against them under Article 233 (organization of actions directed at violating public order, as well as active participation in these actions) and Article 315 (use of force or police resistance) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.
