Prosecutor General: Strengthening fight against corruption in Azerbaijan gives positive results

Azerbaijani Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov said decisive and systematic activities, which carried out in accordance with the Azerbaijani President's policy to strengthen the fight against corruption in Azerbaijan, gave a positive result and was appraised by the population.

"As the received appeals were urgently considered, as well as preventive measures and activities were timely undertaken together with the relevant government agencies, 25 percent of the appeals were resolved positively, criminal cases were launched on 8 appeals and 9 people were brought to responsibility as a result," Garalov said in an interview with the Azerbaijan newspaper.

The Azerbaijani Prosecutor's Office staff marks the professional holiday on Oct.1.
Garalov said the Anti-Corruption Office under the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General completed the investigation of 192 criminal cases against 335 individuals and sent them to court in 2010 and eight months of 2011.

During January - September 2011, the Office launched 133 criminal cases related to corruption offenses and completed investigation of 88 criminal cases against 147 individuals and sent to the court for consideration.

These crimes are mostly related to the facts of bribery (passive bribery), undue influence on the decision, abuse of power, abuse of authority, forgery, robbery, fraud, money laundering, proceeds of crime, and other facts, he said.
