Pakistani ambassador appeals to Azerbaijani people to help manage devastating natural calamity

22 September 2011 [16:23] - TODAY.AZ
Pakistan Ambassador to Azerbaijan Inayat Ullah Kakar held a press conference concerning the natural disaster in his country. The ambassador said Pakistan has been pounded by heavy monsoon rains last month which have caused massive floods in southern part of the country bringing massive damage to life, property and physical infrastructure of the country. “23 districts and about 40 000 villages are affected by the natural disaster and about 400 people were killed”.

Diplomat said the government of Pakistan has provided all possible assistance to rain victims within its means. However, since the scale of devastation is massive, Pakistan’s own resources wouldn’t suffice. United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has launched a flash appeal to international community for assistance. “We also appeal to our Azerbaijani friends to donate generously so that their brothers in distress could be helped. Azerbaijan assisted us during the natural disaster last year”.

Ambassador Kakar said they have opened an account titled Prime Minister’s Relief Fund No. 4501000000203000 in the National Bank of Pakistan, Baku Branch.

Touching upon bilateral relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, the ambassador stressed high-level dialogue between the countries. He said both countries needed to revive economic relations because volume of bilateral trade is not sufficient.

Kakar noted that Pakistani President is expected to visit Azerbaijan this year. Reminding about the mutual support of both countries within the international organizations, the ambassador said his country supported Azerbaijan as a nominee to the UN Security Council’s temporary membership. He said Pakistan supported Azerbaijan in Nagorno Karabakh conflict. “Pakistan is only country, which didn’t recognize Armenia because its occupation of Azerbaijani lands”.
