Chairman of European Committee for the Prevention of Torture holds series of meetings in Russia

A delegation of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture led by the Committee’s chairman Latif Huseynov held a series of meetings with the Russian officials in Moscow and Yessentuki.

During the meetings with Russian Deputy Prime Minister, mandatory representative of the Russian President in North Caucasus Alexander Khloponin, Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev and head of the Russian Investigation Committee Alexander Bastrykin, they discussed the results of monitoring conducted by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Dagestan, Chechnya and Northern Ossetia in April and May, 2011.

The activity of law-enforcement organizations, investigation of torture and abusive treatments were on agenda during the meetings.

Latif Huseynov said the meetings were held in sincere and constructive atmosphere and law-enforcement organizations of the three republics received concrete tasks for the solution of the problems raised by the European delegations.

The officials emphasized the necessity of cooperation between the Russian authorities and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.

Latif Huseynov, Professor of Public International Law at Baku State University was elected as the chairman of the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) in March, 2011. The Committee is one the most important institutions of the Council of Europe and one of the world’s influential organizations.
