Azerbaijan asks Russia’s support in elections for non-permanent seats at UN Security Council

13 July 2011 [19:40] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan hopes for Russia’s support in the elections for non-permanent seats at the UN Security Council that will be held in October this year, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said this in his interview to Interfax.

Minister said he had discussed it with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
“We hope for the support of Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. This support is very important,” he said.

Elmar Mammadyarov mentioned that Azerbaijan first put forward its candidacy for the non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council in the mid-90’s. “This year Azerbaijan is marking the 20th anniversary of its independence. We see ourselves as the regional leader. We feel support in the international organizations and comprehension of Azerbaijan’s importance and role. In this regard an attempt to be elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council is a great experience. It once more confirms our independence and sovereignty and demonstrates that we can pursue an independent policy,” he said.
