
Speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament, Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov yesterday met Mark Field, chairman of the UK-Azerbaijan parliamentary group, member of the Conservative Party and Intelligence and Security Committee from the Cities of London and Westminster.
Asadov said there was strong legal basis for development of Azerbaijan-UK relationship even more. He noted his country attaches great importance to strengthening relations with the UK, adding President Ilham Aliyev's visits to London in 2004 and 2009 are evidence of this.
Asadov noted 23 documents had been signed between Azerbaijan and UK. "We hope that intergovernmental bilateral commission and businessmen will use this opportunity to develop economic cooperation even more."
Asadov underlined the role of parliaments in development of relations between the two countries. He praised the establishment of friendship groups in legislative bodies of the two countries and stressed the necessity of intensification of reciprocal visit of MPs.
The Speaker also touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict which he described as a threat to security of the region and Europe.
He noted the fact that Armenia does not honor resolutions and documents of international organizations such as UN, CoE, OSCE accelerates the situation. Asadov underlined Azerbaijan was ready to liberate its occupied territories by any means. "But so far we prefer peace talks." Asadov thanked the UK government for supporting Azerbaijan's territorial integrity.
The Speaker also briefed the delegation members on the ongoing reforms in Azerbaijan's regions.
Field, in turn, praised the ongoing development process in Azerbaijan. He said the purpose of the delegation's visit was to gather more information about Azerbaijan. He noted the delegation also intends to visit Azerbaijan Karabakh region.
