Azeri Chief Migration Officer meets UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Head of the Azerbaijan State Migration Service Arzu Rahimov yesterday met with United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres.

Rahimov briefed the Commissioner on the migration processes in Azerbaijan, the history of the State Migration Service, as well as progress achieved in this field.

He touched on the actions undertaken to define a refugee status. Rahimov said economic growth in the country drive up markedly the number of foreigners arriving in Azerbaijan every year.

In his turn, Guterres said his organization is interested in deepening cooperation with Azerbaijan and added that Azerbaijan became attractive destination for foreigners. He noted his organization intends to build cooperation to consider the situation of people from third world countries coming to Azerbaijan.

“We hail traditions of tolerance in Azerbaijan” he added. Chief of Azerbaijan State Migration Service expressed his confidence bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees would develop in the future even more.
