
Azerbaijan will become a member of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), said spokesperson of Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry Michael Tene at the press briefing.
According to him, the movement’s 16th ministerial meeting will be held in Bali on May 25-27 and at this meeting NAM would receive the joining of Fiji and Azerbaijan in the organization, makes its total members reach 120 countries, or accounted for 60 percent of the United Nations (UN) member countries.
Tene said that the upcoming meeting would be organized by Indonesia and Egypt that acts as the sitting NAM chair. The next NAM summit would be held in Iran in 2012. Iran would take over the NAM chair from Egypt at that time, he added. Delegations attending the NAM ministerial meeting would address the world’s current issue, among others climate change, pandemic and food security, seek contributions in partly settling those problems. Tene said that discussions on current political issues in the Middle East is also possibly discussed in the meeting as it would also be attended by delegations from that region.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is an intergovernmental organization of states considering themselves not aligned formally with or against any major power bloc. The organization was founded in Belgrade in September 1961 by 25 countries. The organization has 118 members, Azerbaijan has been representing in the organization with the observer status.
