Iran wants to accelerate the solution of the Caspian maritime borders security and national zone determination issue, Iranian Presidential Special Envoy for Caspian Legal Issues Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh said on Wednesday.
In his opinion, there are shortcomings in the methods of fighting smugglers and the illegal catching of sturgeons in the Caspian Sea.
"The determination of national zones will contribute greatly to the provision of security of borders. Border guards display disadvantages in fighting smugglers, illegal catching of sturgeons and in some other cases. This presses for acceleration of works over determination of national zones", Ahundzadeh said.
Once national maritime borders are determined, the countries will perform their duties of securing borders and fighting smugglers better, according to him.
Ahundzadeh said the sides have agreed that a national maritime zone will stretch within 25 miles.
"This is a considerable achievement, and we will intensify work at our next meetings to be held in Russia and Kazakhstan," Ahundzadeh said.
