Lithuania attaches importance to President Dalia Grybauskaite’s forthcoming visit to the South Caucasus countries, in light of the OSCE chairmanship.
"Next week the president will pay a very interesting, serious and purposeful visit to the Caucasus. Together with the delegation, the president will visit Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia," Elta quotes the Lithuanian presidential spokesperson Linas Balsys as saying.
"The visit will take place on May 2-3," Lithuanian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Kestutis Kudzmanas told Trend earlier.
Balsys said that the visit to the Caucasus is very important because Lithuania is chairing the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The countries that will be visited are known for their prolonged conflicts. Balsys says that it is expected that Grybauskaite's visit, as president of the country chairing the OSCE, will encourage dialogue.
"Of course, the situation in Georgia is rather complicated. A more close and normal dialogue between Georgia and South Ossetia should be launched, so that the countries do not block gas or water for each other. The principles of the OSCE in the first place are related to the interests of persons. Let us start talking. Forget the conflicts and ambitions; let us start discussing issues that directly influence the life of people," Balsys said.
Speaking about Azerbaijan and Armenia, the President's representative called resume dialogue and sit at the negotiation table.
"During the visit to these countries, which are in a politically very difficult situation, the president will seek to initiate a dialogue and cooperation among the political leaders of these countries and propell communication between people to foster conversation. The mediators’ role is very important," said Balsys in defining the goal of her visit to the Caucasus.
