Rasim Agayev: "If Armenia starts the war, it will lose"

21 April 2011 [11:47] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az internview with political expert Rasim Agayev.
What do you expect from Armenians in the threshold of April 24? Will the campaign of the Armenian diaspora manage to insist the U.S. president to recognize the so called "genocide"?

The world community doesn’t anymore pay much attention to the "Armenian genocide" issue, because of several circumstances. First and foremost – the large circles of the world community have already realized that it may have been recognized for a while by some circles and parliament as"genocide". But now it became obvious to them that this is just a desmology in the hands of Armenians by the help of which they seek to achieve their goals but it’s not so much as they describe.

The correct and wise step from the Turkish side was that before judging whether the "genocide" happened or not, it’s necessary to establish an international commission and open archives. But Armenians had nothing to do with that.  The Armenian side said first recognize the "genocide" and then we will deal with this. But here even a fool can understand that first comes the research and then decisions.

The second, it’s the result of efforts of Turkey in the international relations, Muslim world and in the region of interest of the US. Washington considers the international intensification of Turkey. The third, the international community is concentrated on problem number 1, events in the Middle East. No one will deal with the Armenian issue. As to the Armenian campaign against Barack Obama, it will not avail them because The US has much bigger issues to deal with. I am sure that this issue rises up artificially and won’t cause any reaction in the USA.

Interests on this issue will decline further. Because the world is now witnessing so important events and changes that put such issues into the background. This is the historical issue and the governments already understand that this should be the object of historians, not politicians. At least, Armenians begin to be bored up with fruitless actions.

Do you expect any changes or advancements in Armenian-Turkish relations?

I think that this is the very issue which the Armenian side can advance in a maximum level and reach the sympathy of the international community and stabilize the situation is its country. But for this, they should eliminate its absurd, artificially exaggerated pretensions and give up its traditional phobias which not only hinder the neighbor relations but poison the international relations and atmosphere.
No advancement can be expected unless Armenia chooses the way of democracy and respect itself. The current stage is obvious - Turkey goes up. It could overcome the crucial phase with Cyprus issue and domestic problems. Turkey opens path to European standards through a new Islamic way of development. Therefore, the significance of Ankara in the international arena is more than the significance of small Armenia which holds pretensions to Turkey, Azerbaijan, Russia and now Obama.

The Armenian Armed Forces again hold military training in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. The Armenian side continues to break the ceasefire. Do you expect the escalation on tensions in the frontline and what, do you think, Armenia seeks by such provocative actions?

I think no escalations will happen. The Armenian side knows very well if it launches the war, they will be the first to suffer and lose.  If they will, this will mean that they will cross out the all previously issued propagative statements and this act is exactly not pleasant and suitable to the international community. Therefore Azerbaijan shouldn’t be fooled with such provocations.
