Azerbaijani PM attends Kiev conference and summit on Chernobyl

19 April 2011 [14:48] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani Prime Minister Arthur Rasizade is to represent Azerbaijan at the fundraising conference for Chernobyl projects and also at the summit on safe and innovative uses of nuclear energy. Both conferences will be held in Kiev on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Azerbaijani embassy in Ukraine said.

Kiev is to host the fund raising conference on Chernobyl Projects, a so-called donors' conference, today, according to today’s statement posted on the website of the Ukrainian Embassy in Azerbaijan.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) plays an important role in organizing the fund raising conference for Chernobyl projects. Ukraine productively cooperates with the bank.

A representative high-level delegation of Ukraine's foreign partners is to attend the conference. They will also participate at the Kiev summit on safe and innovative use of nuclear energy, held in Kiev the same day.

At present, Ukraine lacks about 740 million euros for completing the Chernobyl projects (the main one is construction of a new "sarcophagus", or shelter, and a new storage facility for spent nuclear fuel - ISF-2).

In this regard, Ukraine sought the assistance of the international community.

Ukraine hopes that its partners will not leave it alone on issues relating to nuclear power and it will be able to raise the necessary funds to complete the Chernobyl projects.
