Event was today held at Baku State University on the occasion of March 31 - the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis, APA reports. Rector of the university Abel Maharramov said that this day was marked by Azerbaijanis around the world.

To him, only in 1918, nearly 50 thousand Azerbaijanis were killed in Baku, Lankaran and Shamakhi by Armenians. For about 100 years, policy of genocide and deportation was implemented against the Azerbaijanis 4 times. Genocide was committed in 1905-07, 1915-20 years. In 1948-53, 1988 our compatriots were deported from Armenia. In 1988, the Azeris were completely deported from Armenia:

"This means that the Armenians want another thing. They have only one purpose - to capture the Azerbaijani lands and commit genocide against the Azerbaijanis".

Maharramov said that only in 1918-29 years, Armenians and other forces had captured 30 thousand sq.m. territory of Azerbaijan: "The aggressors and today continue their actions against Azerbaijanis. At all stages of the history the Armenians were committed to their goal. And today they are expanding its territory. Currently, 20% of Azerbaijani territory is occupied by Armenians".

According to words of the rector, genocide policy has not been assessed correctly in Azerbaijan for a long time. In Soviet times, Armenia and Azerbaijan even established friendly relations. But in 1998, after the signing of President Heydar Aliyev’s decree "On Genocide of Azerbaijanis”, the question was put on the agenda in an entirely new plane: "Today, young people should act in line with the strategic direction outlined by the President’s decree "On Genocide of Azerbaijanis".
