OSCE media freedom representative declares on incident with Azerbaijani journalist

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatovic has condemned the recent attack on reporter of Azerbaijani opposition newspaper Azadliq, Seymur Haziyev and called upon the country's government to take urgent action to curtail violence against journalists, a statement by OSCE says.

"Azerbaijan’s authorities must take pro-active measures to prevent violence against the media", said Mijatovic.

Haziyev was beaten by unknown persons on March 26.

The incident was also discussed Monday by Azerbaijani Interior Minister Ramil Usubov and the chairman of the Press Council Aflatun Amashov.

It was reported at the meeting that Interior Ministry and Prosecutor General's Office have send special representatives to the incident scene. Minister Usubov instructed the chief of the ministry's Main Investigation and Inquest Department, Major-General Sarvar Mehraliyev to arrange an initial investigation and ensure the necessary measures for the full, comprehensive and objective investigation of the case.
