PACE Monitoring committee co-rapporteurs highlight results of Azerbaijan visit

28 March 2011 [08:38] - TODAY.AZ
Co-rapporteurs of the PACE Committee on the Honouring of Obligations and Commitments by Member States of the Council of Europe (Monitoring Committee), Pedro Agramunt Font de Mora of Spain and Joseph Debono Grech of Malta, have highlighted the results of their first visit to Azerbaijan.

They made the report at the Committee's meeting in Paris.

Head of Azerbaijan`s delegation to PACE, Samad Seyidov, and member of the delegation, Elkhan Suleymanov, said Azerbaijan was ready for discussions on the honouring of obligations and commitments to the Council of Europe. They said most of those obligations and commitments had already been fulfilled and approved by the Council. A major obligation outstanding, according to Seyidov and Suleymanov, is the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"Although Azerbaijan has had a constructive position on the issue, Armenia's non-constructive stance has been a major barrier to the conflict's solution," they noted.
Other speakers praised Azerbaijan's economic development and positive changes in the country.

The second visit by the co-rapporteurs to Azerbaijan will take place in July or September.
