Baku hosts closed roundtable on the topic "Post-conflict peace-building and experience of co-existence in an example of Cyprus and Northern Ireland conflicts"

The closed round table on the topic “Post-conflict peace-building and experience of co-existence in an example of Cyprus and Northern Ireland conflicts” was held in Baku on the initiative of the Strategic Research Center (SRC) under the President of Azerbaijan jointly with international NGO “International Alert” with the financial support of the European Union.

During the discussions some political officials and experts, who were attracted to the peace-making negotiations, directed to Cyprus and Northern Ireland conflicts and shared their experience on the negotiations in which they took part with the attendees. The international and local experts tried to focus attention on some facts which contributed to the peace processes. The main factor for achievement the agreement, the strengthening of the role of civil society and media in the peace achievement, the establishment of right information policy during the conflicts were the main topics of discussion.

Chief of staff of Great Britain’s former Prime Minister Tony Blair, geberal envoy in the negotiations with Northern Ireland Jonathan Powell, general envoy who led the Belfast peace negotiations in 1996-1998, Northern Ireland’s politician Sean Farren, Cyprus Harmonization Coordinator in the European Union in 2003 , international politician Takis Hadjidemetriou, Secretary General of the Turkish Party of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, former President of Northern Cyprus Mehmet Ali Talat’s special representative in 2007-2010 Kutlay Erk and the other well known politicians and experts are included to the international delegation.

The employees of Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Parliament, FM and other state institutions, experts of Azerbaijani Diplomatic Academy and SRC, the representatives of Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabakh as well as NGOs attended the event.
