Astrakhan marks anniversary of 20 January tragedy

The victims of the bloody tragedy that took place in Baku on Jan. 20, 1990 were commemorated in Astrakhan, Russia.
The event was held in front of a monument to the Azerbaijani National Leader Heydar Aliyev, reared in the Astrakhan Park with the participation of leadership and activists of diaspora organizations, Azerbaijani students, public representatives and Baku's Narimanov district executive power's employees.

The event participants were provided with extensive information about the 20 January events, a crime committed against the Azerbaijani people. It was noted that the events of those days are a heroic page in the history of Azerbaijan's struggle for independence.

Those who addressed the event also highlighted the historical significance of a news conference of national leader Heydar Aliyev in Azerbaijani Permanent Representation in Moscow, where he accused the Soviet leadership in committing such a brutal crime. It was also stressed that a legal assessment to this bloodshed was given during Aliyev's presidency.

Narimanov district of Baku and Astrakhan region's district, named after Nariman Narimanov, are twin cities.
