Panel on topic "Azerbaijan since Independence" to be held in Washington

07 January 2011 [12:53] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan, its problems and developments will be discussed in Washington DC next week, APA's Washington DC correspondent reports.
The panel will be hosted by the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University on January 13 on the topic “Azerbaijan since Independence”.

“Dr. Svante Cornell, Research Director and Editor of Central Asia Caucasus Institute and Silk Road Studies Program Joint Center wrote a book about Azerbaijan. The discussion will be based on Cornell’s latest book named Azerbaijan since Independence (M. E. Sharpe, 2010) that was published only a month ago”, said one of the organizers.

“Mr. Cornell will offer his insights on Azerbaijan’s prospects for creating an open political system, for maintaining a secular state in a predominantly Shiia Muslim society, for resolving the Karabakh problem and for coping with challenges of the "energy curse”.

Examining Azerbaijan’s earlier history, Dr. Cornell will also focus on the complex series of events that established the new state, transformed its institutions, and reestablished Azerbaijan as a major energy source and transport hub.

Dr. Frederick Starr, Chairman of CACI, will participate as well.
