Azerbaijani official: EU should have its word in Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

02 December 2010 [16:18] - TODAY.AZ
The EU should have its word in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and play a more important role in the resolution process, Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Political Analysis and Information Department head, Elnur Aslanov said.

Azerbaijan's younger generations have formed their opinions about the conflict and they are not concerned with the principle of cohabitation in the region with Armenians.

"The longer this remains a problem, the more radical and difficult its resolution becomes," Aslanov said in Baku today during the "Azerbaijan - Eastern Partnership: Regional Challenges and New Opportunities" forum organized by the Azerbaijani Presidential Center for Strategic Studies.

"The OSCE Minsk Group is currently engaged in the resolution of the conflict, but we would like the EU to have its say on the issue and to play a more important role in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," he added.

According to Aslanov, Azerbaijan is not interested in prolonging the conflict, but Armenia's policy seeks to artificially postpone a resolution to this issue. This prevents peace from being established, he said.

"Nagorno Karabakh belonged, belongs and will belong to Azerbaijan," he said. "This is confirmed by the principles of international law."
