Azerbaijan's ruling party to cooperate with parliamentary opposition

23 November 2010 [10:53] - TODAY.AZ
The ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) will cooperate with the parliamentary opposition, NAP Deputy Executive Secretary Siyavush Novruzov told Trend today.

"Earlier, we cooperated on certain issues with the parties represented in parliament," he said. "We discussed priority issues for Azerbaijan."

Novruzov said cooperation will continue in the future.

"We are ready to cooperate and hold discussions on any topic," he said. "We neither distinguish political parties nor exclude the possibility of cooperation with the opposition when it comes to urgent issues for Azerbaijan."

Azerbaijan held parliamentary elections on Nov. 7. According to the Central Election Commission's Information Center, the voter turnout hit about 50.14%.

The CEC reported that 690 candidates ran in the elections in 125 constituencies.

A total of 71 MPs were elected from the NAP.

Representatives of the Civil Solidarity Party, Great Establishment Party, National Revival Movement, Democratic Reforms Party, Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Civil Unity Party, Ana Vatan Party and the Social Prosperity Party received deputy mandates.

"Azerbaijan saw the formation of many new opposition parties that participated in the elections," he said. "Seven or eight parties were formed from the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan. All of them are opposition parties. Their members are people who participated in the liberation movement. They were Abulfaz Elchibey's deputies."

Roughly 70 parties function in Azerbaijan. Roughly 54 are officially registered.
