European Union Special Representative for South Caucasus hails release of young activists in Azerbaijan

EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby hails the release of youth activists - Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizade by Azerbaijani authorities, the diplomat told Trend Sunday on arriving in Baku.

Salyan Regional Court has ordered Friday to release blogger Emin Milli after serving more than half of a prison term handed to him for accusation in hooliganism. Adnan Hajizade was released too on Thursday.

During his two-day visit to Baku Semneby is planning to meet with Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizade.

"I am very glad that Azerbaijani judicial system has adopted the decision which made possible the early release of these two young people. We have been worrying very much because of their detention. Like all other partners of Azerbaijan we are glad that they have been released", Semneby said.

Adnan Hajizade and Emin Milli were arrested on July 8, 2009 after an incident in a restaurant in Baku. They were accused of hooliganism. Milli was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison and Hajizade to two years in prison.

According to Semneby, it is possible to pass on more significant issues after the release of youth activists. Answering the question about parliamentary elections which were held in Azerbaijan in the beginning of November, Semneby noted that to his mind not all opportunities have been applied for the improvement of conditions of holding elections.

"It is necessary to consider all recommendations which are to be given to Azerbaijan and fulfill them in order not to have such issues before the next elections", Semneby said.
