Iranian president is on official visit to Azerbaijan - UPDATE - PHOTOS

Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Iran and Azerbaijan President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has presented an Iran-made equipment, which included a water purification device, tunneling microscope and hearing testing device, to President Ilham Aliyev.

The Iranian leader told his Azerbaijani counterpart the equipment was widely used in his country. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad informed President Ilham Aliyev of the devices' technical and economic features. The Iranian President said his country exported the equipment to Central Asian, Arab, African and Latin American countries.

Azerbaijan and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding on energy and transport cooperation in the presence of Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

“The Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the fields of energy and transport between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran” was signed by foreign ministers Elmar Mammadyarov of Azerbaijan and Manouchehr Mottaki of Iran.

On Wednesday, President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited the Alley of Martyrs to commemorate Azerbaijani heroes who gave their lives for the country`s independence and territorial integrity.

A ceremonial guard of honor was lined up for the Iranian leader here.

Accompanied by his entourage, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame monument as a military orchestra played the national anthems of Azerbaijan and Iran.

Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran have today held a one-on-one meeting, AzerTAc state news agency reported. The presidents praised the two countries` bilateral relations, saying they were developing in a variety of fields.

They stressed the importance of high-level reciprocal visits, and expressed confidence the Iranian leader`s visit would contribute to developing the bilateral ties. The presidents expressed confidence the Azerbaijan-Iran relations would continue developing. Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also discussed international issues.

The Iranian President was welcomed at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport by First Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Yagub Eyyubov and other government officials. Ahmadinejad and Eyyubov had short protocol conversation at the airport’s VIP room.

Later, a guard of honor was lined up for the Iranian President at the square decorated with the national flags of the two countries. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was welcomed by Azerbaijan`s President Ilham Aliyev.

The presidents inspected a ceremonial Guard of Honor as an orchestra played the national anthems of Azerbaijan and Iran. Azerbaijani state and government officials were introduced to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, while members of the Iranian delegation to President Ilham Aliyev.

The Iranian president arrived in Baku to attend the upcoming Caspian Sea summit and to discuss relations with Azerbaijani officials. Before his departure on Wednesday, President Ahmadinejad told reporters that the Islamic Republic welcomes the expansion of ties with other Caspian littoral states. He said the Caspian Sea provides great potential for cooperation between the littoral states and added there were major issues that needed to be discussed among the countries bordering the sea.

The Iranian president also highlighted relations with Azerbaijan and said he would discuss bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international developments with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev during his visit.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and the country’s Energy Minister Majid Namjou accompany President Ahmadinejad in his two-day official visit.
