The Turkic-speaking countries Parliamentary Assembly (TurkPA) is an example of solidarity of the Turkic states, Azerbaijani Parliamentary Administration head Safa Mirzayev said Monday.
"We used to dream about the unity of the Turkic-speaking states. Now we have realized this dream," Mirzayev said at the TurkPA parliamentary administrations' heads meeting in Baku. "In addition to cooperation within the TurkPA, the Turkic-speaking countries should strengthen bilateral cooperation."
Mirzoyev, Turkish Parliamentary Secretary General Sadettin Kalkan and deputy head of the Kazakh Senate apparatus Murat Nurtleuov paid respects to Azerbaijani National Leader Heydar Aliyev and laid a wreath at his tomb.
Kalkan said the Turkic-speaking countries should cooperate for the sake of the entire Turkic world. In turn, Nurtleuov noted the need to strengthen cooperation within the TurkPA. TurkPA was established on Nov. 21, 2008 under an agreement signed by the Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Turkish parliamentary speakers in Istanbul.
Baku hosted the first TurkPA plenary meeting on Sept. 29, 2009. The Assembly Secretariat is located in Baku and has the status of international organization. TurkPA's goal is to support Turkic-speaking countries in international organizations, as well as to help them share their experiences in legislative processes. The assembly also aims to preserve language, culture and history in Turkic-speaking countries, and to further strengthen political, economic and cultural ties between member countries.
