
On Tuesday, Special envoy to the Secretary General on United Nations, vice-chair of
the Reflection group on the long term future of the European Union,
Latvian ex-president Ms. Vaira Vike-Freiberga met with members
of a working group on children's rights at Azerbaijan's Parliament.
Member
of the group, MP Guler Ahmadova raised the Latvian ex-president`s
awareness about works done in Azerbaijan in connection with children's
rights. She said Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev and President of
the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO goodwill ambassador, MP
Mehriban Aliyeva initiated projects to strengthen the protection of
children`s rights.
Ahmadova said the Parliament adopted “important”
laws concerning children's rights, youth and young families, as well as
joined various international conventions. She said the Parliament
supported projects of the Council of Europe under the motto “Let`s say
no to violation against children”.
Other speakers, including MPs
Ganira Pashayeva, Asef Hajiyev and Rovshan Rzayev highlighted the
results of Armenian aggression policy against Azerbaijan, and
indifference of international community to this aggression.
Vike-Freiberga
said “Azerbaijan is rapidly developing”.
“Azerbaijan is not rich
only for its natural resources, but also for its human capital,” she
said.
On the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, she said: “We understand your
problem. We believe that it will be solved soon.”
The meeting also
discussed protection of children`s rights and cooperation between the
country and international organizations in this regard.
